When to switch to summer tires?

The vehicle must be safe in all weather conditions. To do this, first of all, you need to create reliable contact with the road, which is provided by the tires. They are different, they are set depending on the season and then changed with the arrival of another season. Because of this, a reasonable question arises, for example, when to switch to summer tires, removing winter tires for storage.

Some information about rubber

Twice every year, all tire service stations are occupied by anxious people who carry all kinds of wheels - drivers change their shoes on their "iron horses". What is causing this? It's all about the rubber and its composition. She has to work in harsh conditions, from arctic frosts to tropical heat. Therefore, different types of tires are used to provide reliable traction with these environmental changes.

The difference lies in the composition of the rubber. Summer is more rigid, capable of contacting with hot asphalt, and in this case provides excellent grip. But due to its composition, it works at temperatures above 5 ° C, at lower values the rubber becomes too hard and does not create reliable contact with the coating.

In such cases, switch to winter tires. They use softer rubber, due to which, even in cold weather, it clings to the road better. But its positive qualities are reversed at elevated temperatures. Due to the additional softening under this effect, winter tires cannot keep the car on the road. It is considered acceptable to use them until the air warms up above 10 ° C.

Here is the information about the tires, which are guided by all drivers, changing it twice a year. Of course, this is not all there is to know about different tires, but the given data is enough to make a more or less informed decision. When determining at what temperature to switch to summer tires, it is necessary to take into account not its one-time value, but the results of observation over a certain period of time.

And if the air is already constantly warming up above the critical level, including at night, then it is necessary to change the tires. Experts believe that the limit value for determining the possibility of rubber change will be 8 ° C. Timely transition to the required type will ensure its safety and traffic safety in the changed conditions.

About all-season

All of the above applies to tires for ordinary cars. When considering the operation of SUVs, as a rule, equipped with all-season tires, the situation will be somewhat different. It should also be borne in mind that tires of this type can be installed on any vehicle, not just off-road vehicles.

All-season tires, according to the intentions of the manufacturers, are designed for year-round use. This is possible, but not everywhere. The operating temperature range of such rubber is from minus 7 to plus 30 ° C. This allows them to be used successfully in autumn and spring when the weather is unstable. Tires of this type are usually used in countries that do not have a harsh climate, for example, in Europe.

But even then, the decision about when to switch to summer tires and whether it is worth doing it at all is up to each driver independently.

On regulatory enactments

It should be noted that if earlier the replacement of rubber was a purely voluntary matter, then from 01.01.2015 this is no longer the case. A new technical regulation has been introduced, which prohibits driving on summer tires from 01.12 to 28.02, and from 01.06 to 31.08 - on winter tires. So, although it is not strictly defined, from what month they switch to summer tires, nevertheless, there is a ban on the use of tires out of season.

In addition, the regulations set the permissible tread depth - for summer tires it is more than 1.6 mm. Wheels with a pattern of this height are allowed for use on a car. But despite the introduction of the regulation, as before, the driver has to independently determine the moment of switching to another type of rubber. True, now he has an unequivocal ban on the use of summer tires in winter and winter in summer and a benchmark for temperature. For more information on changing wheels, see the video:

Each driver will have to make the final decision to change tires independently based on the technical characteristics of the tires used, the operating conditions of the vehicle and the frequency of its use. In this case, it is possible (and necessary) to be guided by the current technical regulations and the prevailing climatic conditions in a particular area.
